Ottery St Mary lies 30 minutes drive east from central Exeter and 20 minutes from junction 29 on the M5. It’s a town rich in history and personality. Famous for its annual Guy Fawkes night tradition with locals running through the streets carrying flaming tar barrels, and for it mid-summer Pixie Day, it’s also a very liveable place with a thriving town centre with independent shops, good local schools and a great selection of pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. It’s also got a mixture of residential properties from characterful cottages to Georgian buildings, bungalows and river view apartments.
The town is steeped in history from its use as a strategic location during the English Civil War to its associations with the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who grew up in Ottery. The surprisingly large church is at the centre of the community, giving the town a heart and a close-knit feeling.
Ottery is a great alternative to the Exeter suburbs within easy reach of the motorway, city centre, outlying towns and Exeter International Airport. It offers the perfect balance of country living with town life – a peaceful yet lively environment with affordable housing, quaint streets, and with quick access to the Devon hills and to the coast.
